Midland ISD District 5 candidate Karl Boroski — an executive director of local Rope Youth for 15 years — is campaigning on food insecurity and mentorship programs for students.
He filed his nomination recently and faces two opponents with Election Day coming on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
A Midland ISD student, Shwetha Jayakumar from Young Women’s Leadership Academy, has been named a semifinalist for the 72nd National Merit Scholarship Program.
She plans to study biomedical engineering and will compete for scholarships worth nearly $26M — finalists will be announced in February and winners named in spring.

The Midland Chamber hosted its inaugural State of Healthcare event at the Bush Convention Center on Wednesday.
Regional healthcare leaders and Midland Health CEO Stephen Bowerman discussed expanding local surgical technology — including three Da Vinci and two Mako robots—to meet growing community needs.
