  • Animal Services reported a 61.8% jump in rescue transfers in 2025, lifting its live release rate to 72% despite more intakes, with transfers outnumbering adoptions — the shelter will work with rescue groups in 2026 to cut space-based euthanasia.  City of Midland

  • A new lithium carbonate facility opened Friday in Midland along Farm-to-Market Road 715, turning oilfield-produced water into a material for batteries. Gov.   • Chevron donated an $80,800 endowed scholarship to Odessa College rodeo program during the OC Wrangler Rodeo Cowboy Ball; the scholarship will support student-athletes and strengthen the college’s partnership ahead of the annual rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum from Feb. 26–28.  CBS7
  • Midland ISD is investigating a social media post that raised safety concerns at Legacy High School (extra police officers will support student and staff safety) as officials review the matter.  CBS7

  • Permian completed a season sweep of Odessa High by winning both the girls' and boys' basketball games. The girls pulled away after a close first half while the boys won 62+54 on the road, and Permian will play Midland Legacy Rebels on Tuesday, Feb. 10.  NewsWest9
  • Midland Legacy girls defeated Midland High 48 — 31 on Friday at the Chaparral Center to sweep the season and end Midland High’s playoff hopes, while the boys earned their season sweep in the same game. The Legacy girls will finish the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 6:00 p.m.  NewsWest9
