COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Midland and Odessa residents raised over $26,000 for Texas Special Olympics at a polar plunge held on the UTPB campus. Officer Marshall Williams and Special Olympian Zach Smith led the record-setting effort that outpaced other state teams.  CBS7

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Mary’s Catholic Church presents its annual Passion Play as Easter nears. The live performance reenacts Jesus’s final days from the last supper to crucifixion (featuring volunteer cast, builders, and community members) and invites local residents to reflect on the season’s meaning.  CBS7
  • The Museum of the Southwest is offering community tours of the Turner Mansion’s second floor today at 2 p.m. The tours showcase bedrooms, bathrooms, and the Turner family kitchen – part of the mansion’s 90th anniversary celebration and Midland history.  CBS7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Midland’s unemployment rate rose to 3.4% in January, keeping it second lowest in Texas after Amarillo’s 3.3%. The Texas Workforce Commission noted the city’s rate remains well below the state average of 4.5% as its civilian labor force slightly increased to 106,000.  City of Midland

  • TxDOT warns drivers that texting while driving poses serious risks this Easter weekend as it launches its (Talk. Text. Crash) campaign and increases patrols from April 6 through April 13 to curb distractions.  CBS7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Midland Health Services will celebrate National Public Health Week April 7 to 10 with a partner roundtable on April 8 at MLK Center, a Know Your Numbers check on April 9 at the Health Department (3303 W. Illinois Ave.), and an open house on April 10 letting residents explore services.  CBS7
  • Midland police officer Stevie Vargas is recovering at home after brain surgery to remove most of a tumor that was later identified as an astrocytoma. He remains eager to return to work while building up his strength, and a fundraiser is set for April 23 in Odessa to support his family.  CBS7

SPORTS NEWS

  • A rivalry hockey game will decide which nonprofit wins a Chevron donation at Ector County Coliseum today at 7:15 p.m. If the Jackalopes win, SHARE receives $5,000, while a win for the Ice Wolves awards $5,000 to New Mexico Blade Runners and $2,500 to the losing nonprofit.  CBS7
