- ➤ The Board of Directors of Keep Midland Beautiful will recruit volunteers to pick up litter near the exits at Loop 250 and Midland Drive on May 1st (noon to 1:00 p.m.) as part of the ongoing Great American Clean-Up/Don't Mess with Texas Trash Off event that runs through May 31st. CBS7
- ➤ Midland Community Theatre will host a fundraising dinner for the PUFFS Sorting Ceremony benefitting the theatre on May 1 at 6:00 p.m. Attendees will be sorted into Smarts, Braves, Snakes or Puffs and are advised to dress in their house colors—tickets cost $75 for adults and $50 for kids. CBS7

- ➤ Odessa Police Department extended condolences to Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and the family of fallen Deputy Jessie Perez — who died on April 22 at about 12:30 p.m. in Lamesa after debris from a commercial vehicle struck him during a traffic stop on West US 180. CBS7

- ➤ The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin hosted its 2025 Literacy Summit in Midland to offer free training for educators and workforce advocates. Leaders met to discuss low literacy levels and practical steps to improve reading skills—an effort aimed at boosting local workforce readiness. CBS7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, May 3, voters in Ector, Midland and Howard County will vote on ballots that include at least two propositions with local races in Ector and Howard County. Midland ballots will ask for a $450 million bond for Midland College and a $645 million water systems bond while Ector ballots include a $325 million bond for Odessa College upgrades and Howard ballots include five propositions (covering bonds and an emergency services district).
