EDUCATION NEWS

  • A strict cell phone ban began on September 1 after Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1481, and teachers across Texas report higher student engagement and fewer discipline referrals as phones remain in backpacks — even as some students are still adjusting. Midland ISD also said its latest statement confirmed improved classroom communication and behavior.  CBS7
  • Today, Midland ISD announced that two students—Gabriel Stromberg from Legacy High School and Jillian Bejil from Young Women’s Leadership Academy—have been named National Merit Semifinalists, an honor given to less than 1 percent of high school scholars nationwide.  CBS7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Midland County Commissioners Court approved a new salary schedule for the Sheriff’s Office that will take effect Oct. 1—separating it from the county pay system to attract qualified law enforcement personnel. The new scale offers deputies a starting pay increase from $47,000 to $80,000 and sets jailers at $65,000, cadets at $71,000, and investigators at $83,000.  CBS7
  • Midland Mayor Lori Blong today launched her re-election campaign with a focus on efficiency, public safety and quality of life improvements. She plans to engage voters through forums and social media events — continuing the work she started to lower taxes and invest in local infrastructure.  CBS7
